The pub in question was ‘The Hero of Maida’ - sited near the Regent’s Canal in Edgware Road. The hero was Major General Sir John Stuart (1759-1815), a commander in Italy during the Napoleonic Wars. The French had taken over the Kingdom of Naples causing its King to flee to Sicily. Street defeated them at Maida in Calabria down in the toe of Italy. This one-sided victory prevented the French from invading the island. The King was suitably grateful, bestowing the title of The Count of Maida upon Stuart, who also received a £1000/year pension from the British Government. The pub was licensed in 1810 - and the original area of Maida Hill had become known as the Vale by the 1880s. |

Is a natural oil finish the right choice for your hardwood floors?
After DIY floor sanding or using a professional floor sanding company, you'll need to give some thought to the finish you want to apply to your newly sanded floorboards. A very popular way of protecting and finishing your floors right now is to use an oil rather than a polyurethane finish. This creates a rich and warm glow and a deeply penetrating protective layer, as oil bonds to the molecules in the wood, unlike polyurethanes which lay on the surface. Over time, the wood will acquire an aged patina rather than the somewhat worn and faded look you can get with other finishes.
Durable and beautiful
A penetrating finish not only makes your floors look beautiful, but it can be surprisingly durable, too. Whilst it's true that the wood is potentially more exposed to damage, superficial scratches will not be as noticeable as they are with a polyurethane finish. And even quite serious damage is far easier to spot repair without the need for sanding and finishing the entire floor. In fact, unlike a polyurethane finish which requires you to strip back the floorboards by floor sanding all over, a natural oil finish can simply be reapplied without the need for floor sanding.
Safe and sustainable
A natural oil finish will obviously be safer for your family. But it's also a more sustainable way of treating your wood, and with tinted varieties available, you'll also eliminate the need for an additional stain.
Labour intensive
One of the downsides of using a natural oil finish is that you may have to acquire several coats of oil that can take up to 48 hours to dry. There are one coat oil finishes on the market, but be aware that this type of finish needs to be applied with a rag and can be quite labour intensive. This is one job you may prefer to leave to the professionals.
Keep it clean
Unlike a polyurethane finish, an oil finished floor can be mopped over with a special cleaner that actually reinforces the finish. An oil treated floor can stand up to damp mopping and is more resistant to damage from spills, making it the ideal choice for the busy household.
